A positive model can be anyone from our personal life to even a celebrity; all it takes is for some inspiring words to pull us through our toughest struggles. To be a proper positive role model you must have three major features such as independence, motivation skills and modesty. Without those characteristics you can lead someone in the wrong path if you are not clear about what you voice to them.
A positive model must know how to efficiently be independent. It is okay to have help from others occasionally but our true help comes from ourselves within. So in order for you to motivate a person from old bad habits to new ones they must want to change on their own first. When we have a sense of independency we can accurately make better judgments that benefit us rather than what other people may tell us. You must first trust your own advice and thought. When was the last time someone told you to do something and you quickly said no? It is because you knew the precautions of that act, someone who does not trust their own instincts would allow the other person to con them into doing it even if it felt wrong at first. If we can’t trust our own word then we will always allow someone to guide our every move and that may bring us further in a hole. Someone who is dependent knows that we have to think clearly, open-minded and smartly when it comes to decision making. Any wrong move can guide that path in the wrong direction. Running into a problem we never have dealt with or have a hard time can and will be hard; which is why we need someone who is level headed to give us the right advice. A mentor who is independent will not only help you solve your problem but they will do it in a way that will make you answer your own questions. Giving a sense of hope that you can do it alone all it takes is patience and a clear mind.
Motivation is what keeps us going even if when we know things will not work out the way we want them to. To be a great mentor you must be able to motivate others. It is hard to keep a positive mind when everything seems to be falling into one bucket making it too heavy to carry. As a good motivator you was know how to talk to your audience based on who they are. Some can get motivated very easily and some not so easily. You want to make them feel as if they can handle any issue coming that has not arrived yet. When we motivate someone it allows them to see a problem more of a challenge not to run from it but to run into it and see the big picture. A motivator must never dictate the person they are motivating but talk in a peaceful yet determined tone.
To be independent has to do more with having a sense of self. Determining who you are is a reflection of the advice you give to someone. In order to guide others we must be able to follow our own advice. Most people can’t take advice from their own thinking process. The advice we give to a person must be clear, positive and beneficial to succeed in the goal. There will be stubborn people who won’t want to either take the advice or may feel it’s hard to overcome. So we must explain it in a way each person can understand. Being independent gives you the capability of clearly knowing what the real issue is. Some people don’t know what the problem is until someone shows them. You as the helper should also trust in your own advice. If it would not help you if you were in the same position then you should not expect it to help them. Independence is just more of knowing your advice is accurate, safe and will bring change. Lastly one characteristic of being a great mentor is to be modest. You should always be honest and kind. Some people need aggressive to get the message. Then there are those who need much more peaceful guidance. No one seeks advice from a liar. When we are honest it tells the person that they can trust our word. They know we will not give them false information just to make them happy. But give them information to provide justice. Overall a positive model must have all the characteristics of a honest, independent and modest person. They will accurately put themselves in the person shoes to see what that person needs to hear. Everyone mind set is different. What helps one won’t help another so it’s best to evaluate the person in need of help to help them specifically. A mentor also will not tell the person what they want to hear. It is more of what they need to hear. These are all the characteristics a mentor needs to have in order to help anyone. To know yourself means you know no one is perfect and we all seek help. You should never judge anyone situations. Your goal is to promote them to a better living life style.
